24 JUNE - 16 JULY
Nga Rangatahi Toa proudly present MATARIKI: THE PATH IS MADE BY WALKING, an inter-arts exhibition built around the mahi of Art ACTion, a six-week Nga Rangatahi Toa community cultural development project held in partnership with Studio One over June and July. Mentored by some of Auckland’s top creative talent, including Tourettes and Louie Knuxx, Matariki: The Path Is Made By Walking showcases the creative talent of young South Aucklanders excluded from mainstream education. PHILIP TSE:
REACHING THE HORIZON AND BEYOND // I.O.W.A. COLLECTIVE
(IT’S OK WE’RE ARTISTS!)
30 JULY - 20 AUGUST
“Life is a series of natural and spontaneous changes. Don’t resist them; that only creates sorrow. Let things flow naturally forward in whatever way they like” – Lao Tzu.Today, Studio One Toi Tū occupies a new place for the community as a centre for arts and culture. Philip Tse’s satellite exhibition in collaboration with Uxbridge Creative Centre brings together a collection of artists whose works respond to our changeable world and the elusive horizon. On from 30 July August to 20 August in Galleries One, Three and Four. The work of I.O.W.A. Collective shows in Gallery Two from 30 July until 20 August. Created in response to site, I.O.W.A. (It’s OK We’re Artists!) work collaboratively in social spaces to dismantle the hierarchies and boundaries between past, present, artist and audience. “Site means a space that holds people together – together we are strong”.
RUTH HICKMAN // SEAN MCDONNELL
27
AUGUST - 9 SEPTEMBER
In Galleries One and Two between 27 August and 9 September, is ‘Light Space Action’ by Ruth Hickman. Ruth’s work explores the substance of paint, optical effects and the possibility of a ‘surround-sound’ experience of colour, blurring the boundaries of site-specific painting and abstractions on canvas. Over in Galleries Three and Four from 26 August to 9 September is ‘All Shapes and Sizes’ from Sean McDonnell. A new collection of mixed-media paintings, McDonnell explores the fragility and diversity of life through hand-worked, sculpted paintings that pay homage to the very act of making.
TAMA GRAVENOR // BRUCE EDMAN // TOI
ORA ARTISTS COLLECTIVE
23 SEPTEMBER - 17 OCTOBER
Gallery One hosts ‘Pop!’ from Tama Gravenor from 23 September to 17 October - a fun and impressionistic point of view of science fiction and pop culture icons from the silver screen, TV and comics. Over in Gallery Two at the same time is ‘Boundary Conditions’ from Bruce Edman, a richly textural show with emphasis on materiality, exploring entropy, erosion and disintegration as the boundary conditions of our existence. Next door in Galleries Three and Four, Toi Ora Artists Collective presents Roots, a multi-media group show that explores our identity, art, the universe and beyond. The show features new works from artists who participated in the successful inaugural Outsider Art Fair held last November.
Studio One Toi Tū provides a dynamic location for creative work of all kinds - performances, exhibitions, events and more, with resources, tools and spaces for artists working within every medium and budget.
