Insights from the Maramataka & Science
In this month's Ngā Pae o te Māramatanga (NPM) - Horizons of Insight Seminar and as part of our celebration of Matariki, NPM presents Insights from the Maramataka & Science, next week on Wednesday 24th June.
Presented by NPM Principle Investigators Professor Mike Walker & Dr Pauline Harris, this compelling seminar will describe the effects of the lunar cycle on fishing and horticulture and on the traditional lifestyles and practices of Māori & Polynesian communities throughout the Pacific.
The Māori lunar calendar, or maramataka, informed planting, harvesting, fishing and hunting and this presentation describes the convergence of mātauranga Māori and contemporary scientific discovery, rediscovering and reinterpreting long held traditional knowledge, and finding modern day uses for the wisdom associated with Māori astronomical observations.
NPM's Matariki seminar will be held in the Fale Pasifika, at the University of Auckland.
