Birdman Competition Sees Freezing Plunge Into Lake

Hits 90.4 Birdman Competition Sees Freezing Plunge Into Lake Wakatipu

The brave, the foolish and the creative all came together in Queenstown today to plunge into a freezing Lake Wakatipu in the Hits 90.4 Birdman Competition as part of the American Express Queenstown Winter Festival.

A huge local crowd braved the cold to line the lake front as entrants attempted to defy gravity and get the vote of the judges. Flying Minions, Blazing Jet Boats and Crazed Chickens were a feature of the competition, all enjoying a few seconds of mid-air glory before hitting the ice cold water.
The winners of the Hits 90.4 Birdman competition were:

Best Flight – The SKYCITY Minions
Best Costume – Early Bird Gets the Worm
Best Corporate Entry – Shotover Jet
Overall Winner - Asplundh

The 90.4 Hits Birdman Competition was just one part of the iHeartRadio Day On The Bay which involved multiple races, all based around the water – The Jucy Undy 500, the LifeProof Splash and Dash, the Vincent Holdings Jet Sprints and the UE Dance Battle.

“The iHeartRadio Day on the Bay is what the Winter Festival is all about” said American Express Queenstown Winter Festival Manager Lisa Buckingham. “It captures the spirit of Queenstown’s lake and the surrounding mountains ….. and lets our brave competitors remind us all to stay warm in winter!”
The American Express Queenstown Winter Festival runs from June 19 to June 28 and involves over 50 individual events. The Festival attracts over 45,000 visitors to Queenstown and brings over $55 million into the economy.
