Aleh and Powrie Women’s 470 Open European Champions

Aleh and Powrie officially crowned Women’s 470 Open European Champions

Jo Aleh and Polly Powrie are now officially 2015 Open 470 Women’s European Champions after the six day regatta wrapped up in Aarhus, Denmark today with a light wind medal race.

The NZL Sailing Team’s double-handed crew were assured of the title before sailing today’s race after amassing a lead of 24 points making them unbeatable.

While finishing last would have been enough today, Aleh and Powrie enjoyed the day, crossed in 2nd and then sailed home to celebrate the overall victory.

Aleh and Powrie have Olympic gold and World Championship gold in their sailing resume, but this is the first time they’ve won the European Championship crown.

Rounding out the podium places were Tina Mrak and Veronika Macarol (SLO) for silver and Anne Haeger and Briana Provancha (USA) for bronze.

NZL Sailing Team men’s pair Paul Snow-Hansen and Daniel Willcox ended the regatta in 17th place after missing the medal race cut.

Aon Fast Track crew Sam Barnett and Zak Merton finished 24th in the silver fleet.

The next major regatta on the calendar for Jo Aleh and Polly Powrie is the 2015 Aquece Rio Olympic Test Event on in Rio, Brazil from 15-22 August.
