Launch of te reo music video made in Porirua
A new te reo music video shot on location in Porirua is being launched to mark Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori, Māori Language Week, which starts today.
The Porirua City Council and NZ On Air funded video of the track, Hopukia te tao, by Toni Huata was produced with the assistance of acclaimed Wellington percussionist and composer Gareth Farr.
Hopukia te tao features on Toni’s award winning fourth studio album Hopukia. The video was filmed in late June, 2015 under the Bring it Home scheme that lets artists secure more funding if they film their video, hire people or buy goods and services in a specific location.
NZ On Air has kicked off the Bring It Home scheme in Porirua, and is hoping to take it to other towns later in the year. Under the scheme Porirua City Council is putting $2,000 into the making of the video, in addition to NZ On Air’s music video (MakingTracks) funding of $6,000.
Toni said she enjoyed filming with Penn Productions against the stunning scenery of Whitireia Park and Pukerua Bay.
“The sea was so calm and Tama Nui Te Ra (the Sun) shone brightly, it was hard to believe we were in winter, we were very lucky and the elements were on our side!” said Toni.
Porirua Deputy Mayor ‘Ana Coffey is keen to see more artists take up the opportunity.
“Porirua is a city that recognises creativity and talent,” she said. “Porirua City is bursting with talented individuals who we want to support.
“This video showcases to show New Zealand what a beautiful, creative, energetic place Porirua is.”
The video will be screened at Karaka Café, Wharewaka on Wellington’s waterfront at 5.30pm tomorrow. It will also screen on Māori Television and feature as a Māori Language Week installation at the National Library of New Zealand. It’s also online at https://youtu.be/Hy2jvQQYn4g
