Big Field, Big Names at Daybreaker Rally Wairarapa

Big Field, Big Names at Daybreaker Rally Wairarapa

With over 60 entries already confirmed for the Trusthouse Racetech Daybreaker Rally Wairarapa, being held on 3 October, the main interest will rightly be about who will be the new national rally champion. Being the final round of the Brian Green Property Group New Zealand Rally Championship, it is all or nothing for these competitors to stake their claim at this event.

However there is more to this event than just the championship and there are a few well known names who will be looking to take line honours for the rally. Especially considering that there are 4 past and current National Champion drivers competing, representing a total of 14 championship titles between them.

It will certainly add spice to the field, especially where home town hero Richard Mason and 2 time champ Geoff Argyle retain the ability to play at the pointy end of the field.

For Mason, being the defending champion, he made the gut wrenching decision to sit this season out due to a lack of sponsorship. However he and wife Sara won’t let their home event go by without making others work hard to earn the trophy. Despite competing in an older car, they will still be ones to watch on the stages.

Geoff Argyle has accumulated 2 championship titles and has been a regular competitor in regional and non-championship series since. Having won the Rally Xtreme title twice he has shown he still has the pace to push the front runners hard.

Further back in the field, but still showing the qualities that made them champions are Joe McAndrew and Bruce Herbert. McAndrew has been well known for his marathon rally exploits since his stints at the championship, and at this event he is bringing out the trusty Honda Integra. While not a contender for the overall win here, his pace and flamboyant style will certainly entertain the crowds.

Equally Herbert has been enjoying getting back to where it all started for him, and the sheer fun of driving his old Lancer EX shows each time he comes out for a play.

Whatever happens there will be a new national champion crowned at this event. The fight for the rally trophy isn’t so certain, and it will depend on how the gravel flies. Full event information is available at www.rallywairarapa.co.nz or follow us on Facebook.
