LOST BiRD will sing for you

Wellington band LOST BiRD are taking ‘playing a hometown gig’ to a new level.

From late September, singer-songwriter Ali Whitton is bringing his guitar, his songs and his band mate violinist Oliver Vetter to play six private shows at houses in and around Wellington’s suburbs – and yours could be among them.

The band are booking six private shows, and are asking people who are interested in hosting a gig at their house to get in touch – or to come to their next show at Southern Cross this Saturday (19 September) to see them audition for you.

“There’s something pretty cool about playing in a smaller space and meeting people, and singing just for them and their friends. It’s more personal and we get to meet super-cool Wellingtonians that we’re stoked to introduce our music to. Our next gig is at the Southern Cross gig so it's a chance to come and listen and see whether you think we'd suit your house,” says Ali.

The band will record a track live at each of the shows for a special ‘Wellington Home Sessions’ EP to be streamed on Soundcloud. Audiences give koha at the shows for the band, and can also buy limited edition LOST BiRD Spring Tour memorabilia.

Ali says the idea for the mini tour of Wellington homes came from playing his new songs at home in Owhiro Bay to an audience of friends: “We’ve since played a few shows at smaller venues, and really enjoyed them. The songs are sort of like stories so it’s cool to connect with people and build a rapport with them – they ask questions and get involved; it’s fun. Plus most of my writing is inspired in some way by Wellington; the winds and the hills and the seas, so it felt like the people who are most likely to enjoy it are people who are surrounded by the same city.”

Ali says Wellington and its famously erratic Spring weather has also inspired the idea of bringing shows to people’s houses: “Sometimes, the downside of a gig is, you have to actually leave the warmth of your house and go out. So these shows take that out of the equation.”
