Discover the world of dragon boating at Westhaven’s Open Day
Dragon boats will entertain visitors to Westhaven Marina’s Open Day on Saturday 3 October, and inspire them to take up a sport that has the potential to be life changing.
The Auckland Dragon Boat Association will be recruiting for new paddlers at this special event, and invites all to attend to find out what the sport is about.
As well as offering a marina tour by dragon boat; visitors will watch a dragon boat tug of war demonstration event, talk to paddlers just back from racing in Hawaii, and those getting ready for the World Club Crew Champs next year. There will a chance give dragon boating a go and sign up for a program of summer paddling.
“This is a team sport, you make friends for life, and it gets you fit and healthy in a beautiful location” says spokesperson Chris Stone of the sport he has been part of for 14 years.
Visitors will also be able to try Stand Up Paddling Football in a special floating football field - an excellent way to try paddling for first timers, or for experienced paddlers to have fun doing something different.
Westhaven Marina’s three yacht clubs will have their doors open and are keen to talk to people that are interested in getting into sailing. There will be a marine market with exhibitors that include Auckland Rescue Helicopter Trust, LegaSea, Auckland Transport, AJ Hackett Bungy, and Coastguard, a car boot sale, boats for sale, vintage car display, food, guided dock tours and more.
