Dance Studies students showcase their talent

Dance Studies students from the National Institute of Creative Arts and Industries (NICAI) at the University of Auckland will take to the stage next week in a Performance Series showcasing their talent.

The series starting on Tuesday October 27 kicks off at 6pm with 24 Heads 48 Feet, a show embracing the spirit of choreographic exploration. The evening features a line-up of diverse works by Dance Studies Programme students in their second-year of study.

This is followed by Any Last Words on Wednesday October 28 at 7pm, by third-year students, with works that delve into the past, mark the present and contemplate the future. New ways of moving are explored as students prepare to complete their degrees and respond to the question: Any last words?

Starting Friday October 30 at 7pm for two nights, Dance Studies students come together to take part in Action. Student choreographers will present works that ask questions and make statements about their perspectives on the world.

One week later Dance Studies students from the Honours and Masters programme present their show Seriously Human at TAPAC. For two nights at both 6pm and 7pm on the November 5 and 6, a variety of new works will feature, intended to explore and expand current concepts in choreography.

Lecturer Sarah Knox, Artistic Director of Action, has curated the event alongside other members of staff. She says "the students work hard. They have to pitch their ideas to a panel, explain their concept and process, and demonstrate some of the pieces in development. This simulates the experience of submitting works to festivals.

“All the events, including solo, duet and group pieces, on as part of the upcoming Performance Series, demonstrate the high standards achieved by both teachers and students in the Dance Studies Programme.”
