Former All Black Ian Kirkpatrick to join Cycle Tour

Former All Black Ian Kirkpatrick to join Farmstrong Cycle Tour

All Black great Ian Kirkpatrick is joining what he describes as a ‘hell of a good cause’ by committing to ride the first two legs of next year’s Farmstrong Fit4Farming Cycle Tour.

The tour will see a core peloton of 20 riders cycle from Ngatea in the Waikato down to Invercargill to help highlight the benefits to rural communities of being active.

“I had heard about Farmstrong and was later nudged in the ribs by my old mate John McBeth who suggested I should take part in the cycle tour. I looked into it further and thought it’s for a hell of a good cause, so why not?” says Ian.

“I still like to keep fit and for me cycling’s the best option, as it’s a bit easier on the body than running. I think it’s really important that farmers look at other ways of being active other than the day-to-day duties of the job. Farming can help with strength, but the aerobic fitness side of things is equally important.

“I think it’s about having a good balance of the two. I’m not saying go out and bust ya guts, I’m saying get on the bike, get off the farm, clear the mind and use different muscles and different parts of the body and enjoy it. It’s not rocket science and it can only be good for you,” says Ian.

Now living in the Gisborne region, Ian doesn’t consider himself retired from his sheep, beef and cropping days, but prefers to say he’s ‘not farming any more’. Ian will join the peloton for the first two stages of the cycle tour – a distance of around 300km from Ngatea to New Plymouth.

“I reckon all farmers should to look into Farmstrong and take on the simple tips it promotes in getting off the farm and checking in with your mates and neighbours. I challenge all farmers to get involved with the Farmstrong Challenge and see how many kilometres you and your mates can do,” says Ian.

“To have a kiwi farmer and sporting icon such as Ian on board Farmstrong is just phenomenal. We have a passion and drive to make New Zealand the fittest farming nation in the world – and Ian understands the benefits the whole country will reap when we get there,” says Farmstrong ambassador Ian Handcock.

“As farmers we need to look at ways we can get off the farm and connect more with our neighbours and others from the community. The Farmstrong Challenge and Cycle Tour will help us achieve that. We’re coming up to half a million kilometres pledged – so what are you doing to be part of the movement, to help yourself and rural New Zealand?” asks Mr Handcock.
