Wellington weight lifters win gold, gold, gold and gold
Wellington’s only four Master’s Olympic
Weightlifting representatives have all won gold in their age
and weight class at the inaugural New Zealand Master’s
Olympic Weightlifting competition. This is a first for the
capital, the competitors and their club, 41°
Weightlifting.
Matt Dyson, owner at 41°, says: “This is the first time New Zealand has held a Master’s Olympic Weightlifting competition. There were only four competitors from Wellington, all from our club, and it was an amazing result for all four of them to make first-place podium in each of their age and weight categories.”
“All four lifters are relatively new to the sport, and for two of them it was the first time they have competed outside of the club. So to bring home four gold medals is not only a superb result, but also a reflection of the hard work and dedication each of them have made to their training.”
The Wellington representatives are Donna Dyson, Paule Poulin, Tracey Kai and Matt Dyson.
The 41° Club is revolutionising Olympic Weightlifting in Wellington by making it more accessible for people of any ability, and their personalised coaching has seen one of the Master’s lifters who won gold at Nationals also break 35 national masters records – 24 last year and 11 so far this year.
Olympic weightlifting involves two lifts – the snatch, and the clean and jerk. Both are very technical lifts.
The National Master’s Olympic Weightlifting competition was held in Queenstown on Sunday 24 October and featured 19 female and 15 male lifters. 41° had three female and one male competitor.
