Orchestra Wellington General Manager leaving on a high note

Orchestra Wellington General Manager leaving on a high note

Orchestra Wellington General Manager Adán Tijerina has announced his resignation.

After four years at the Orchestra’s helm, it seems a good time to leave, Tijerina says. “I came on board at a time of flux and was tasked with helping to solidify the Orchestra’s position in the Wellington market and wider arts sector. I think we’ve achieved that,” he says. “The Orchestra is in a great state.”

“Our Subscription Series has expanded by 50 percent and we’re attracting bigger audiences. We have seen an exponential increase in both our subscription sales and our local authority funding,” he said. “This puts the Orchestra in a secure position.”

“Meanwhile, we have strong continuity with our Music Director, Marc Taddei, our Board, who have changed very little during my tenure, and our administrative staff. It’s the sign of a healthy organisation that’s attracting and keeping the loyalty of its members and stakeholders.”

“Coming into this role was a great learning process for me and I couldn’t have done it without such a strong team around me.”

Tijerina says he has worked to ensure that Wellington understands the importance of what the Orchestra has to offer in terms of a healthy arts community.

Orchestra Wellington Music Director Marc Taddei calls Tijerina a “dream manager” and says his contribution has been extraordinary.

“His insightful and tireless approach to arts management has paved the way for the artistic standards the Orchestra has achieved, and his inclusive approach to ticket sales, marketing and outreach programmes has helped to transform people’s expectations of what an orchestra can mean to a community.

“I will miss him as a colleague”.

Orchestra Wellington Board Chair, Francis Cooke QC, joined in congratulating Tijerina for what he has achieved over the four year period with the Orchestra.

“Adán’s key success has been to rebuild the connections the Orchestra has with the community, particularly by substantially growing the subscriber base, but also more generally,” Cooke says.

“He will be a great loss, but he leaves us with the Orchestra thriving. His successor will find an organisation that is in great heart because of what he has achieved” Cooke said.

Tijerina leaves to devote more time to his growing family and pursue other business opportunities. “I hope to be able to announce a significant new project in the New Year.”

Recruitment starts immediately, and Tijerina will stay on until early 2016.
