Graffitti Mural Marathon
AUCKLAND, Nov. 18, 2015 – Graham Hoete aka Mr. G, is one of New Zealand’s most talented street artists. His undeniable creative talent has seen his artwork move out from the shadows of a dark city underbelly and into the global spotlight. What has really propelled Mr. G’s rise, has been his mastery of photorealism. He is able to produce detail previously not thought possible with an aerosol can.
It was Mr. G’s love of dogs that launched his career as a professional artist. “I love dogs so I started painting them,” he said. Mr. G soon found that word got out about his portraits and the commissions started piling in. This lead to Mr. G embarking on a doggathon, painting 100 different dogs in a year. “People see something like this and they kind of wonder, how the heck did you do that with a spray can?” he says. “It’s about changing people’s perceptions of graffiti art in general.”
Mr. G’s latest project has been something a little out of the ordinary. He has been in New Zealand collaborating with V Energy. “V got in touch with me after seeing some of my work and we came up with a pretty awesome project,” he explains. Mr. G and the team at V, covered a wall in downtown Auckland with white T-shirts creating a blank canvas for Mr. G to do his thing. “Basically they challenged me to take everything that makes V awesome and put it up on a wall.”
But the challenge didn’t stop there. Mr. G only had one night to produce a 10 x 3 meter mural, something that would normally take him three days. “I am known as a fast painter, but this was a massive test for me. By the end of the night I was pretty out of it, luckily I had a few cans of V to keep me going.” The artwork was only left in place for 24 hours and then the T-shirts were removed one by one. “The cool thing about this was it created a handful of unique pieces of art. So while my full artwork no longer exists, people can have their own little piece of it,” he explains.
Having left his mark on New Zealand, Mr. G will now return to his home in Sydney. He is not sure what is next but feels blessed that he has been able to turn his passion into a profession. “Art is what I love, it is what I am passionate about. From a young age I started drawing and painting, and I have never stopped,” he explains.
