Open Nights at Studio One Toi Tū

WEDNESDAY 9 DECEMBER - ARTISTS IN RESIDENCE IAN POWELL, BEN PALMER, MICHAEL DUIGNAN & SELWYN VERCOE

Wednesday 9 December marks a special December edition of Open Nights at Studio One Toi Tū, with fascinating conversations with our new artists in residence Ian Powell, Ben Palmer, Michael Duignan and Selwyn Vercoe.

This one hour inspirational after-work conversation offers a glimpse into the mind and processes of these four multi-disciplinary artists. The evening is free and open to all, so drop in from 5.30pm with the talk starting at 6pm. Prepare to mix and mingle and have a chat to our speakers about their work and projects underway at Studio One Toi Tū.

Ian Powell co-founded Hairless Films in Japan in the early 90’s that went on to produce several international award winning short films. Working primarily in the role of cinematographer recent credits include: Gavin Hipkins, This Fine Island (2011) andSantiago Sierra's Destroyed Word (2012) among others. Ian has recently set up ‘Reversal’, a film lab processing 8mm, Super 8, 16mm and Super 16 colour and black and white reversal film and film scanning facility. He is using the residency to develop ‘Reversal’ for the film making community and explore collaborative avenues, including a festival for supporters of analogue film. Ian will be discussing his concept for the lab and supported events.

Industrial designer Ben Palmer has exhibited work around Aotearoa and New York, and is exploring furniture design in a deconstructive, minimalist sense. His work seeks to make something unique and different in an area that is overrun with continually "new" designs. During his residency Ben will be developing a range of table and chairs, solving issues relating to the design and finalising his production method.

Michael Duignan is an experienced filmmaker, having premiered the 2006 short filmTruant at the New York Festival. Since then he has directed TV shows including Go Girls,The Blue Rose and more. His 2013 short film Ten Thousand Days has been viewed more than 100,000 times on Vimeo and was featured as a staff pick. Throughout his residency Michael will be developing this short as a feature film script.

Selwyn Vercoe’s interest in Tikanga Maori art and multi-cultural diversity has inspired himto express his creativity through painting. Since pursuing art therapy while in rehabilitation Selwyn’s arts practice has quickly grown and is gaining recognition within the Auckland arts community. He’s been involved in multiple exhibitions, including having curated the recent Splice exhibition The People of Karangahape Road and founded theart collective ‘Karanga Mai’, which was crafted to reflect the multicultural demographics of Karangahape Road. Selwyn will be working on a series of works based on Taha Whanau/Family Values during his residency at Studio One Toi Tū.
