ASB Classic Named the Players Favourite Yet Again

The 2015 ASB Classic has been voted "Best Asia-Pacific International Tournament" by the WTA Players for a second consecutive year at the annual WTA Year-End Awards.

The annual WTA Awards began in 1977 to recognise the year and prestigious honours announced included the Comeback Player of the Year, Venus Williams who is the ASB Classic’s defending champion. 2015 was an outstanding year for Williams, she returned to the Top 10 for the first time since 2011 finishing the season with a ranking of 7.

"It’s great to get worldwide acknowledgment from our players. We are certainly punching above our weight for the player’s experience in Auckland and it’s something we pride ourselves on. To have the players say they love what we do for them is a great pat on the back for our team." Tournament Director Karl Budge said.

ASB Chief Executive Barbara Chapman is delighted to hear the ASB Classic has been voted best international competition for the second year running. “ASB is proud to be involved with the ASB Classic and it’s pleasing to hear that WTA players share the same sentiment. The ASB Classic continues to go from strength to strength, attracting some of the world’s top tennis players to New Zealand. We look forward to yet another outstanding competition in 2016.”

The WTA “Best International Tournament” award caps off a great year for Auckland ASB Classic organisers having won the Best Fan Experience at the ATP Awards earlier in 2015. Auckland's men’s tournament did the double having won the award in both 2014 and 2015.

The 2016 ASB Classic will be one of the biggest and the strongest yet with the event getting underway in less than a month’s time with tennis superstars Venus Williams, Caroline Wozniacki and Ana Ivanovic the headliners for the women’s field.
