Humorous Arts Trust awards 2015’s best comics in Wellington
It’s time again to celebrate the Wellies, the annual comedy awards for the Wellington region. This event has a proud comedy heritage; with past recipients becoming household names such as Ben Hurley, Steve Wrigley and Cori-Gonzales Mecuer.
Held on Sunday December 13th, this will be a night of performance, laughter and awards that celebrate the past, present and future of the comedy scene. Starting with a hilarious showcase of both the best and brightest of comedic talent in the capital and our last year's winners. The event will finish with the awarding the prestigious and iconic gumboot shaped Wellies Trophies.
Between performers and comedy producers there are 27 excited and nervous people in the capital who have been nominated across 7 Wellie Award categories, waiting to see who has won the following: Most Improved Comedian, Best MC, Best Show, Best Show Concept, Best Off-Stager / Industry Friend, Best Newcomer, and the most coveted award of Best Comedian.
In 2015 there have been some stand-out performers, with several Wellington Comics having been nominated for more than one category. We interviewed two of them.
Jundas Capone has been nominated for five of the seven categories; Best newcomer, Most Improved, Best Show for “Dank Comedy Show”, Breakout Performer and Best Comedian. For someone performing for only a year, this is a a great achievement. He had this to say: "I started from the bottom and haven’t really been away from the 'scene' and looks like I've received much accolade. To be honest I'm stoked about the friends I've made and the memories created in the comedy community, with the people and learning I’ve done. We live in paradise, get busy living or get busy dying. Haha.”
Alice Brine has been nominated for four of the seven categories; Most Improved, Best MC, Breakout Performer and Best Comedian. She has also been put in the running for a Billy T award 2016, a national prize for emergent comedians. She has made an incredible and sensational splash in the comedy scene this year and had was typically excitedly cracking jokes upon finding out about her nominations: “"Why? How many else are other people nominated for? Do you win money? That would be great I have a big dentist bill."
The Wellies Awards 2015 are inviting comedians, producers, venue managers, media, marketers, and loyal supporters to enjoy the award festivities on Sunday 13th of December at VK’s Comedy and Blues Bar, celebrations start from 6pm.
