New Zealand Doco Fest Qualifies for the Oscar®
The Documentary Edge International Film Festival (Doc Edge)organisers are proud to announce that the festival been selected by the Academy Award® as a qualifying festival for short documentaries.
Commencing with the 2016
Festival, winners of the Doc Edge
Best New Zealand Shortand Best
International Short Awards will be eligible for
consideration in theDocumentary Short Subject
category of the Academy Awards®
without the standard theatrical run, provided the films
otherwise comply with the Academy rules.
“Throughout the last decade, Doc Edge has screened several short films that have gone on to be nominated or won an Oscar®. We are thrilled with this recognition which is a testimony to the strength of the¬¬¬ festival’s programming. This is a huge milestone for Doc Edge” says Dan Shanan, Doc Edge Executive Director.
Carrying on the theme of awards, Doc Edge is also proud to announce that NZ On Airwill sponsor four local awards in 2016. Awards include cash prizes and the introduction of two new categories to be presented at the Doc Edge Gala Awards in May.

Documentary - $2,500
• NZ On Air Best NZ Short
Documentary - $1,000
Plus new award
categories for 2016:
• NZ On Air Best NZ
Online Documentary or Factual Series - $2,500
• NZ On
Air Best NZ TV Documentary or Series - $2,500
“We are delighted that NZ On Air is partnering with Doc Edge Festival in presenting four local awards. This is a major boost to NZ filmmakers and recognises the importance of NZ made content.” adds Shanan.
Entries for the new award categories are now open on the Festival – Award section of the Doc Edge website until 26th February 2016.
