What are we without our memories? We tell stories to keep those we love alive. Without these stories, how do they live on? What will you leave behind? What is your legacy? How do you tell someone you love them, when they don’t remember your name?
In 2005, Rob’s Nonna began to forget things. In 2007, she was diagnosed with dementia. In 2012, she died, a shell of her former shelf, in the dementia ward of a nursing home. When a family is faced with a loved one developing dementia they react in their own individual ways. Rob Gaetano wrote a play.
My Pet, My Love weaves together three stories about loss, love and the fears we face. An innocent child discovers death for the first time; an elderly gay couple struggle with the onset of dementia; and a 32 year old actor reveals his fears from the trivial to the profound.
Written by Rob Gaetano (As You Like It – Melbourne Fringe, Unconditioned Heart – La Mama Explorations, Kiss Me Like You Mean It – MARC Up) and directed by Lily Fish (Misfits – La Mama, Yarn – Melbourne Fringe, Unprovoked - DIG Collective) My Pet, My Love blends personal stories, physical theatre and comedy. With lighting design by Suze Smith and sound design by Jai Leeworthy, My Pet, My Love had a successful season as part of Melbourne’s Midsumma Festival in 2015, and in 2016 will make it’s international premiere at BATS Theatre for Wellington Fringe.
My Pet, My Love is the second show from MARC UP Productions, but their first original piece of work, and has been developed with the generous support of La Mama Theatre and Hothouse Theatre.
Reviews from My Pet, My Love – Midsumma Season, January 2015 “Gaetano has a natural command of the stage, and morphs between the characters confidently… he delivers sensitive and poignant moments of love, loss, memory and death.” – Time Out Melbourne
“Gaetano’s acting here is provocative and in parts stunning.” – Planet Arts Melbourne
