Taumarere Awa Art Exhibition Opens Over Waitangi

A month long art exhibition opened over Waitangi weekend at the Kawakawa art gallery showcasing a number of emerging weavers and artists from Ngāti Manu, one of the hapu in the Bay of Islands.

The theme of the exhibition is “Te Taura Whiri o Ngati Manu ki te Awa Tapu o Taumarere (The plaited rope of Ngati Manu” which binds hapu to the sacred River of Taumarere.

“For Ngati Manu, the Taumarere river is a major food bowl, it sustained many generations of our people and this exhibition pays tribute to that special relationship that exists between our people and the Awa of Taumarere” says Ngati Manu spokesperson Arapeta Hamilton“ and it’s a taonga, a treasure that we hope to pass onto to the next generation.”

The exhibition will be held at Kings Theatre Art Gallery in Kawakawa until the 11th of March.
