Evolution Motorsport Classic Speedfest Brings Stars And Special Cars to Teretonga

The Evolution Motorsport Classic SpeedFest will bring some motor racing stars and special cars to Teretonga Park near Invercargill this weekend.

Italian Touring Car legend Gianfranco Brancatelli, the 1985 European Touring Car Champion, will race a Volvo 240T in the Historic Touring Car Class at the event. Brancatelli also got a crack at Formula 1 during a highly competitive era although he failed to qualify in three outings with under resourced teams - Kauhsen and Merzario.

While he is not racing this weekend, kiwi Howden Ganley who raced in the Formula 1 World Championship during the 1970's, will also be in attendance. Ganley raced at the top level for several seasons with BRM, Frank Williams' Iso-Marlboro team, March and Maki. Ganley scored ten F1 World Championship points in his career and was second in the 1972 Le Mans 24 Hour Race with Frenchman Francois Cevert.

The Historic Touring Car Class features a car of real significance to New Zealanders with the first appearance of the Ford Mondeo used by kiwi Paul Radisich to win the 1994 World Touring Car Championship at Donington Park in the UK. Scott O'Donnell will drive the car at Teretonga.

The Mainland Muscle Cars will be extremely popular with a field of big banger cars such as Ford Mustang's, Chev Camaro's, Holden Torana's, Monaro's and more while in the Formula Libre field two big, booming Formula 5000 machines - that of Steve Ross from Dunedin (McRae GM1) and Russell Greer of Blenheim (Lola T332) will come up against Damon Leitch in the Ralt RT4 Formula Atlantic that he used to win four from four recently at Highlands Motorsport Park.

The Classic Saloons feature some former Shellsport cars plus several BMW E30 Rennsport competitors while Vintage Racing Cars, Sports Cars, Pre 65 Saloons and the Noel McIntyre Drainage Clubmans Saloons are also on the programme.

Tickets for this year's Evolution Motorsport Classic SpeedFest are available from Auto Centre in Tweed Street, Invercargill and E Hayes & Sons, Dee Street, Invercargill while in Gore they can be obtained from Harrisons Supplies in Mersey Street. A pre-purchased weekend pass costs just $25 or if purchased at the gate a weekend pass costs $30. Saturday only tickets are $15 at the gate while Sunday only tickets are $20. Children 14 and under are free if accompanied by adult.

The on track action commences at 9.00am each day.
