Armstrong Confident Ahead of Winter Cup Kart Meeting in Italy

Kiwi karter Marcus Armstrong is confident ahead of his second big European meeting in the KZ2 class, the 21st annual Winter Cup at Lonato in Italy this weekend.

The 15-year-old from Christchurch proved quick on debut in the KZ2 class at the season-opening Champions Cup kart event in Italy a fortnight ago and has already shown good pace in practice at Lonato, being 10th quickest in his first session, sixth in his second and second in his third.

"Yes," the works Tony Kart driver said last night. "Preparation has been good and we have had many test days since the Champions Cup."

The annual Winter Cup meeting is one of Italy's biggest and most important, with all the key teams entered and over 280 drivers vying for a name on one of the trophies.

Interest in this year's event spiked on Wednesday when four-time World Champion and current work Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel tested with Armstrong and Tony Kart teammate Marco Ardigo.

Reports at the time suggested that the Ferrari driver would be competing this weekend, but Armstrong confirmed that the media speculation was wide of the mark.

The KZ2 class Armstrong is competing in this year has attracted 68 entries including those of Tony Kart team leader Marco Ardigo who is a four-time World and four-time European champion, as well as two-time KZ1 World Cup title holder and European champion Bas Lammers, and five-time world champion David Fore.

Fore is one of number of former Winter Cup champions, a list which includes the likes of former F1 driver Vitantonio Liuzzi and current F1 drivers Daniil Kvyat and Max Verstappen.

Marcus Armstrong will this year contest the Italy-based WSK Super Master series and Cup meetings, the three-round CIK-FIA European Championships and the single round CIK-FIA World KZ Championship meeting.
