Musos gather to support Nelson School of Music

Top Nelson musicians are throwing their support into the Nelson School of Music rebuild by doing they what do best – singing and playing their instruments.

The line up is lead by popular five piece women’s folk group Cairde, who are reforming especially for the concert. Coincidentally, Cairde’s final concert was the last to be staged in the School before it was closed due to earthquake risk in 2013.

Chair of the rebuild fundraising committee Colleen Marshall says the
Nelson School of Music Fundraising Concert next Sunday (February 28) will celebrate the amazing depth of musical talent in Nelson.

“These are all experienced performers who will engage the audience for a marvelously varied night of music,” she said. “It is wonderful that they are putting their energy and talent into this show - with the added support of the Theatre Royal all the money raised is going into the rebuild.”

The concert line up also features well-known string quartet La Vida, Nelson’s leading world music choir Mosaic, Nathan Torvik and Siobhan Sweeney with their interpretations of songs from folk to reggae, Celtic band Gael Force featuring Bob Bickerton, Brendyn Montgomery and Davy Stuart, and gypsy jazz exponents Django Schmango with guitars and violin played in the style of Django Reinhardt.

Closed in December 2013 by earthquake risk, the School is soon to commence construction on its strengthening and redevelopment plan, which includes a new rehearsal and teaching space on the current Rainey House site.

Attendees at the concert will be able to support the rebuild by purchasing a seat in the refurbished School auditorium, in the current Take Your Seat campaign.

The concert is at 7.30pm on Sunday February 28, at the Theatre Royal. Tickets are only $35 (plus booking fees) and are available from the Theatre Royal, phone (03) 548-3840 or from TicketDirect online here.
