CubaDupa 2016 opens with mass music rendition of a kiwi classic!

National icon Pōkarekare Ana celebrates its 100th birthday this year having started out as a first World War love ballad, and whether you have a place in your heart for the Prince Tui Teka, Hayley Westenra or Dame Kiri Te Kanawa versions, this renowned song is as kiwi as the buzzy-bee, pavlova, gumboots or number 8 wire!

Later this year Pōkarekare Ana will be gifted to the Royal New Zealand Air Force Band by the whānau and iwi of creator, Paraire Tomoana, as its official slow march.

It is our momentous honour to celebrate this taonga with YOU and to open CubaDupa 2016 with a mass choir rendition of this kiwi classic - starting 12pm Saturday 19 March at any entry point to the Cuba Street Quarter.

“This is a very exciting endeavour for the RNZAF. This beautiful piece has long been a favourite of mine, and the band, so we are delighted to further enhance our connection with the work. It is also an honour to be part of the opening of CubaDupa and we look forward to the people of Wellington coming and joining in singing with the full 50 piece Air Force Band.“ - FLTLT SIMON BREW, Director of Music for the RNZAF

We warmly welcome you to join us to sing this beloved song with artists from RNZAF Band and 250 singers from Wellington College Chorale, Wellington East Girls Cantala, Wellington Community Choir, and NZ Post Choir, as we simultaneously walk to converge on Wellington Airport Swan Lane Dancehall to commemorate this gift and kick off CubaDupa 2016 together as one voice.

"We are positively delighted to be able to give the first breath to CubaDupa 2016 with this iconic song, with our highly inventive New Zealand Air Force Band, and 100’s of massed voices on the street. Be a part of something extraordinary." - DREW JAMES, CubaDupa Artist Director
