Auckland War Memorial Museum Presents "in Flanders Fields"

Auckland War Memorial Museum Presents an Exclusive Concert – ‘in Flanders Fields: Jef Neve And Endurance in the First World War’

Auckland War Memorial Museum presents a special concert by renowned Belgian pianist and composer, Jef Neve, Saturday 2nd April in the Museum’s Event Centre.

The concert is an exciting collaboration between the Belgian Embassy in Canberra, the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra (APO) and Auckland Museum, and is presented as part of the Museum’s First World War Centenary programme, ‘He toa taumata rau: Courage has many resting places’, exploring the lesser known stories of the WWI.

Jef Neve composed ‘In Flanders Fields: Jef Neve and the Endurance of the First World War’ for the highly-rated television series ‘In Vlaamse Velden’ (In Flanders Fields) for Flemish TV, about a family trying to survive during the War- sending its sons to the front, defending their house while German Colonels confiscated their home, and the paradox of living “together” in one house.

19 members of the APO and four singers, including Madison Nonoa (NZ Opera Dame Malvina Major Emerging Artist) and Emma Sloman (NZ Opera Freemasons Resident Artist) will perform the composition supplemented with readings connecting the experience of New Zealanders and Belgians during WWI, and bringing the stories of endurance during the First World War to life.

Jef Neve has become a prominent figure not only in his homeland Belgium and his reputation is rapidly spreading over the rest of the world. He is a multifaceted musician and composer with a varied career which includes performing at international Jazz Festivals, compositions for theatre, over a dozen album releases and he has worked with artists like Jamie Cullen, Sam Sparro, Ilse De Lange, Gabriel Rios, Tom Mc Rae and Pascal Schumacher.
