Student Volunteer Week - Giving thanks to our student volunteers
New Zealand’s Student Volunteer Week (SVW), a weeklong celebration of all things student volunteering, kicked off yesterday.
"Students make up a massive part of NZ’s voluntary effort and should be recognised for their contributions," says Scott Miller, Chief Executive of Volunteering New Zealand.
Running for the second year, SVW is a national campaign organised by Volunteering New Zealand, which promotes and encourages student volunteering. Throughout SVW, students, educational institutions and community organisations are able to think up creative ways of celebrating and rewarding student volunteers and inspiring other students to begin volunteering.
“Volunteering as a student can offer many benefits: it can offer experience in a field and mean the difference between one job applicant and the next.”
“Also, students who volunteer are likely to feel a stronger connection to their community than those who don’t,” says Mr Miller.
Volunteering not only benefits students but the wider community.
“We know of many organisations that rely on students help to function, and research indicates that someone who volunteers as a student is more likely to volunteer throughout their life, says Miller.
All along SVW, events will be organised on campus, providing volunteers with recognition and awards, and students will be able to share positive volunteering experiences with others.
“We want student volunteers to feel good about their contribution and share their volunteering stories during this week.
“We also want to encourage students not yet volunteering to have a look around for opportunities that will suit them,” says Miller.
Student Volunteer Week (SVW) runs from April 11 – 17 April 2016, find out more about here:http://www.volunteeringnz.org.nz/student-volunteer-week-2016/
