“Opera for everyone” to become part of Wellington

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – Friday 15 April, 2016

“Opera for everyone” to become part of Wellington’s vibrant arts scene

Newly-formed Eternity Opera Company will bring opera productions to Wellington audiences that can be enjoyed by everyone – from opera fans to first timers. Their first, Mozart’s Don Giovanni, will have its season from 20-27 August at the Hannah Playhouse.

“Our aim is to stage productions that are exciting and accessible to anyone,” says director Alex Galvin. “The productions will be in English, at smaller venues and reasonably priced; while keeping the quintessential things that make opera great: talented singers, a top notch orchestra, and lavish set design and costumes.”

This popular opera, set in 18th century Spain, follows the impulsive and charismatic Don Giovanni as he travels through the country seducing women. But when Don Giovanni commits murder, he unleashes a dark power beyond his control.

“By staging the opera in English, the audience will be able to appreciate not just the beauty of Mozart’s music, but also all its theatrical humour and drama, ” says producer Sandra Malesic.

Eternity Opera Company’s annual productions will also serve to support the talented singers and musicians of the region, providing a further opportunity to showcase their talent.

All principal singers are Wellington-based professionals. Lead Mark Bobb, who has sung extensively in New Zealand and the UK, is playing his first Don in this production.

“We have an outstanding line up,’ says conductor Simon Romanos. “The New Zealand Opera company have been incredibly supportive and are assisting us in a number of areas of production.”

Romanos is conducting his first opera in New Zealand for several years, after working as musical director in Germany, Austria, the United Kingdom and Australia. The esteemed chamber orchestra will be led by former New Zealand String Quartet violinist Doug Beilman.

Galvin has been a film director for over fifteen years, with two theatrically released feature films When Night Falls (2007) and Eternity (2012), and is currently in production on his third Before the Darkness. This will be the first opera he has directed, having been involved as a member of the NZ Opera chorus for over ten years.

Tickets for Don Giovanni can be purchased from www.eternityopera.co.nz or www.hannahplayhouse.org.nz
