Joyce and Haydon Come Up Trumps in Round 2

Joyce and Haydon Come Up Trumps in Round 2 at AON NZ Junior Open
The top 4 seeds in both the Boys and Girls Open of the AON New Zealand Junior Open have come through unscathed. The upsets have come from the lower seeded players Winona-Jo Joyce and Alex Haydon in the Girls Open.
In the Girls Open the top 4 seeds Abbie Palmer, Anna Hughes, Kaitlyn Watts and Anika Jackson have won their games in 3 tonight and proceed onto the quarter finals. Courtney Trail and Rhiarne Taiapa have also made their way into the quarters playing to their seedings.
The first upset of the Girls Open came from 12th seed Winona-Jo Joyce against Australian Lauren Aspinall. Aspinall played strong squash in the first game and kept ahead of Joyce to close out the game 11/7. Joyce never lost faith in her ability though and played strong structured games with brilliant shots working Aspinall around the court. Aspinall couldn’t edge Joyce and lost the next two games for Joyce to take the lead 2-1. Aspinall though looked set to turn the tables in the fourth managing to level the game score making it anyone’s match for the taking. Joyce continued her strong shots and accuracy forcing Aspinall to make the mistakes and Joyce claimed the first upset in the Girls Open.
Australia made sure to get one back on the Kiwis when 11th seed Alex Haydon came out against 6th seed Lauren Crowhurst. Crowhurst looked steady in the first two games and took an early lead over her opponent. Haydon was not one to give up the fight though and she forced Crowhurst out of the 3rd and 4th match in a comfortable fashion. The two players came out fighting in the fifth and played some controlled shots but Haydon proved too strong and she took a win for Australia in five.
In the Boys Open all went to plan for the higher seeds with Jamie Oakley, Scott Galloway, Alex Oswald and Matthew Lucente playing to their top 4 seedings. The match of this round for the Boys Open had to go to Quinn Udy and Tyler Ranger. Ranger dominated in the first match playing controlled shots which Udy struggled to be able to answer at points. Udy however was not going to make this easy for Ranger and he played structured rallies moving Ranger around the court forcing him to make the errors and Udy claimed the next 2 games to take the lead 2-1. Ranger dug deep in the fourth and went back to some controlled rallies to edge out the win and level the game scores at 2-2. Ranger took an early lead in the fifth, however some unforced errors and determination from Udy saw the score level at 9-9. Both players threw some dives into their game to try force the other out, it was a tense moment for all, Ranger took the first match ball, but Udy held it together and forced the errors from Ranger and eventually the match to claim his space in the quarter final.
The Quarter Finals for the Boys Open begin at 11:30am whilst the Girls Open are on at 12pm. Full results can be found below and all other results can be found on iSquash.
