"Danilin shook his head, saying, 'Now where on earth are we to find such basses? They are as rare as asparagus at Christmas!' Nevertheless, he did find them. I knew the voices of my countrymen...”
(Rachmaninov)
After last
year’s sold-out and highly praised performance of
Rachmaninov's Liturgy of St John Chrysostom, Bach Musica
NZ’s choristers return to St Matthews-in-the-City to
delight their audience with the composer’s favourite
piece: His All-Night Vigil or also known as
Vespers.
Premiered 101 years ago in Moscow, Rachmaninov's Vespers' 15 movements have been described as his most quiet, deeply moving and reflective work. Shaken by the on-goings in his beloved Russia and Europe, the composer emptied his heart into this introspective masterpiece of vocal complexity.
With a rather slim performance history since its creation in 1915 due to 70 years of suppression of the church in Russia and elsewhere due to the lack of capable basso profundos, this concert promises to be a rare treat for the heart & soul.
Bach Musica NZ welcomes back Russian tenor Dmitry Rusakov and one of New Zealand's most sought-after altos, Sarah Court. The concert will be conducted by Rita Paczian.
Set in the beautiful acoustic and intimate atmosphere of St Matthews-in-the-City, Bach Musica NZ welcomes you to witness Rachmaninov's reflections on a world that is not too different from the circumstances we are facing today.
