Megan Campbell to show at Wairarapa Art Sale
Well-known Wairarapa artist Megan Campbell has painted three of her signature faux naïve works for this weekend’s Wairarapa Art Sale in Featherston and they’ll be quick to sell.
Writer Katherine Mansfield is the subject of a framed oil painting on linoleum, which is a nod to the art sale sitting in the same weekend as Featherston’s Booktown. It’s a shadowy work bringing to mind dimly lit Victorian villas and a more darkly coloured work reminiscent of Campbell’s earlier work. The second is a detailed concertina unfolding to tell the story of Mansfield’s life and work – ideally suited to sitting on a shelf, part sculpture and part painting.
The third work is an earlier piece titled ‘The Judges’, which is a composition inspired by the flower judges at Wairarapa’s local A & P show.
Campbell has lived in Featherston for five years and visiting her house is like stepping into one of her paintings. Small, interesting things are dotted everywhere in pastel colours; recycled jars holding single flower stems; lemon tea served from a Susie Cooper teapot.
She loves Featherston for its diversity of people. ”There is an ever-increasing pool of people quietly working away on their creative pursuits.
“It was important to me to support the community by contributing to the Art Sale with these quick, light-hearted works,” Campbell says.
“Winter is a great time to create; I always find it’s easy to stay home, hunker down and make work. Art making is an integral and necessary part of my daily life.”
Megan’s work will show at the Wairarapa Art Sale at 14 Wakefield Street, Featherston. The exhibition opens at 6pm on Thursday 19 May and is cash and carry meaning people can buy work and take it straight home.
The show runs over the Featherston Booktown (20-22 May) weekend and features almost 40 artists including Kathy Bartlett, Ellen Rodda, Campbell Kneale, Ken Stokes and Emma McCleary.
