Mountain Safety Council urge caution
Mountain Safety Council (MSC) urge caution when heading to alpine regions
Mountain Safety
Council CEO Mike Daisley encouraged people to remember the
five simple rules of the Outdoor Safety
Code.
"We'd like to remind all trampers and
climbers to refresh themselves on the Outdoor Safety Code.
There is some incredibly important information in there that
might make the difference to you making it home"
“Any fatality in the outdoors is a tragedy, and we really feel for the family going through an incident like this."
Many people saw the Queen's Birthday weekend as a great opportunity to get outdoors said Daisley.
"There was a clear weather window and a long weekend, so high participation in outdoor activities was expected."
"It appears that the weather didn't play a huge role in the incident, but we're working with authorities to get a clear picture of the events leading up to this tragedy."
With a growing list of search and rescue events on the mountain this year Mr Daisley urged caution when heading outdoors, particularly in alpine regions.
"This is the second incident on the mountain in a week, and there have been a few near miss events recently that could have ended very differently."
"We love to see people enjoying the outdoors, and we encourage kiwis and visitors to do so as much of this as they can, but we want everyone to return home safely. Your safety is your responsibility and you need to keep that front of mind in the outdoors."
