Giving Thanks On World Refugee Day
As messages of praise and thanks for volunteers are flooding in during National Volunteer Week, Volunteering New Zealand would like to recognise volunteers on World Refugee Day, a global observance dedicated to raising awareness of the situation of refugees around the world.
“We want to give special thanks to the volunteers in the community who work with agencies and groups to respond to the needs of refugees resettling in New Zealand”, says Scott Miller, Chief Executive of Volunteering New Zealand. “Volunteering plays an important role in refugee resettlement and the successful integration of refugees in the community”.
VNZ works with organisations who make a huge contribution in refugee's settlement and inclusion into the society, including the New Zealand Red Cross, Auckland Regional Migrant Services, English Language Partners New Zealand, New Zealand Newcomers Network, and Multicultural New Zealand.
“The volunteers who work for these organisations and the other volunteers who work with refugees around New Zealand should be recognised for giving their time and effort to help others”, says Miller.
If you want to make time for the refugee resettlement in your community, these organisations list opportunities to volunteer on their website, or visit your local community’s volunteering centre to find opportunities near you.
National Volunteer Week 2016 is held from the 19th to the 25th of June.
Through the themes Make time - Whai whā and Thanks for making time - Kia ora mō tāu whai whā, we’re celebrating the time made by volunteers and the invaluable contribution they make to our communities.
Volunteering New Zealand (VNZ) is an association of New Zealand organisations that have a commitment to volunteering, such as volunteer centres, national and other organisations. Their mission is to promote, support and advocate for volunteering. www.volunteeringnz.org.n z
