Sarjeant Exhibition Officially Revealed

More than 200 invited guests attended the official opening in Whanganui last night ( Friday June 24) of a unique exhibition – Revealed - featuring a selection of recently uncoverd art works from the 97-year-old Sarjeant Gallery Te Whare o Rehua Whanganui.

The 40 works on display range from European paintings and prints spanning close to 300 years of art history to Jacobean style tapestry and specially crafted wooden children’s toys used in the Gallery in the 1970s. They are among several thousand works that were revealed last year when the nationally significant art collection was re-housed from the basement of the heritage gallery building to a temporary gallery in Whanganui.

The landmark neo- classical gallery in Pukenamu Queen’s Park that housed the collection since it was built in 1919. It has been closed to the public for just over two years pending a proposed $34 million redevelopment that includes earthquake proofing, restoration work and construction of a new wing to house the collection.

REVEALED – Collection discoveries from our recent move and a second exhibition SEE WHAT I CAN SEE - Discovering New Zealand Photography was also officially opened last night (June 24) by the Hon Chris Finlayson and will be on display at Sarjeant on the Quay until September 18. The exhibitions are being officially opened by the Hon Chris Finlayson QC Friday 24 June.
