Christchurch’s Centre of Contemporary Art (CoCA) is pleased to present two major international artist talks.

The artist behind the current ‘Vertigo Sea’ exhibit at CoCA, John Akomfrah will be speaking on Tuesday 19 July. John is UK based so the talk will be via video link. Questions are sought in advance and can be submitted via CoCA’s Facebook page.

Award winning contemporary artist Lisa Reihana will be speaking (in person) at CoCA on Thursday 4 August in the final days of the Vertigo Sea exhibition that closes on 7 August.

Reihana will represent New Zealand at the Venice Art Biennale in 2017, with her exhibition, Emissaries, which includes the panoramic video in Pursuit of Venus [infected]. The Venice Biennale is the world’s leading contemporary art forum, often referred to as the “Olympics of the art world.”

During her CoCA talk Lisa will discuss her practice in relation to 'Vertigo Sea' and 'Tirohanga' by Bridget Reweti, also on at the gallery.

Reihana says she was inspired by the work of Black Audio Film Collective and John Akomfrah's writing during her student years.

“His experimental examination of the project of colonisation and Black politics, the issues of migration and racism resonates with poetic force.

“CoCA's presentation of Vertigo Sea shouldn't be missed. I look forward to this rare opportunity to view his lifelong research into culture, nature, history and humanity today,” says Lisa.

Her talk is at CoCA, 66 Gloucester Street, on Thursday 4 August at 6pm. $5 General Admission. CoCA Friends, Collaborators and CoCA Volunteers FREE. Please register and pre book at http://coca.org.nz/events/lisa-reihana or pay $5 at the door.
