Japan Foundation’s Travelling Exhibition: Japanese Pottery

The Rising Generation from Traditional Japanese Kilns 1 – 14 September 2016 First Floor Gallery at St James Theatre (77-87 Courtenay Pl, Te Aro, Wellington)

The Embassy of Japan, in cooperation with the Wellington City Council, is very pleased to announce that the Japan Foundation’s travelling exhibition– “Japanese Pottery - the Rising Generation from Traditional Japanese Kilns” will take place from 1st until 14th September 2016 at the First Floor Gallery at St James Theatre.

This exhibition introduces the works of a total of 35 artists active in seven major traditional kiln sites in Japan.

These artists differ in orientation, including some who carry on long traditions of pottery production while pursuing ever-richer standards in their craft and others who seek to create individualistic works exploring new forms. All are promising artists who will be leaders of the next generation in the ceramic arts in Japan. The theme of this exhibition focuses on "vessels," showing how Japan’s ceramic artists understand the function of vessels in pottery, and provides insight into the present situation and the future of Japanese pottery.

Traditional kiln sites: Arita and Karatsu, Hagi, Bizen, Kyoto vicinity and Tamba, Kutani and Kanazawa, Seto and Mino, Tokyo vicinity and Mashiko.

The Japan Foundation is the Japanese Government’s cultural affiliate to promote international cultural exchange activities.

Regular opening hours: Mon–Fri 7:30am-5:30pm, Sat & Sun 8:30am-4:30pm (During theatre performances (1-4, 8-11 & 13 Sep), the gallery remains open until the performance ends.) Admission to the Exhibition is free.
