New Zealand Young Writers Festival Begins Thursday

NEW ZEALAND YOUNG WRITERS FESTIVAL BEGINS THIS THURSDAY / NEW PRESENTERS ANNOUNCED

The second annual New Zealand Young Writers Festival opens this Thursday 1st September and announced new additions to its line-up today.

Molly Crighton, winner of the 2016 Write Now: Dunedin Secondary School Poetry Competition, will join Hera Lindsay Bird, Gregory Kan and Lynley Edmeades for the Words with Friends opening event at6:00pm on Thursday. Legendary local DJ and previous music director at Radio One, Simon Wallace will be spinning vinyl and members of Dunedin’s slam poetry scene will round up the evening’s proceedings.

On Friday night at 6.00pm Alex Casey will be joined by journalist Jess McAllen, poet Hera Lindsay Bird and writer/former Green MP Holly Walker for the On The Rag live podcast recording. This event looks at the media’s portrayal of women and will take place at the Leviathan Hotel.

Friday evening continues with the 30th Dunedin PechaKucha Night, also at the Leviathan Hotel. Nine guests will present during the evening including David Hall, Stef Animal, Hera Lindsay Bird, Holly Walker, Sasha Borissenko, Toby Morris, Siana Fitzjohn, Emma Harcourt and Rupert Morris.

On Saturday 3rd at 2:30pm, Dunedin artist Dudley Benson will be joined by musicians Totems, Stef Animal and Nadia Reid for the songwriting panel Keep That Blind Person in Mind at the Otago Pioneer Women’s Hall.

Also on Saturday, the artists Totems, Stef Animal and Murdabike will be performing at the Electric Salon Social, a night of live electronic music taking place at the Wolf at the Door cafe from 8:30pm.

The festival’s final event True Stories Told Live will feature Henry Feltham, Gregory Kan and Brannavan Gnanalingam each telling a unique short story about their personal experiences. Story topics range from learning the ways of the universe in Kenya to being wrongly arrested for mass murder. This will take place at the Otago Pioneer Women’s Hall over club sandwiches and coffee at midday on Sunday 4th.

The Festival will be held from 1st – 4th September, featuring 15 events all of which are free. Registration is required for workshops by emailing look@youngwritersfest.nz. All up to date information can be found on the festival website www.youngwritersfest.nz.
