Six Otago Polytechnic finalists at national design awards

Six Otago Polytechnic finalists make it to national design awards

Three Otago Polytechnic Design Communication students – as well as two graduates and one staff member – have been included in the 2016 Best Awards.

An initiative of The Designers Institute of New Zealand, The Best Design Awards is the annual showcase of excellence in graphic, spatial, product and interactive design. Gold Pins are awarded to the best project in each discipline, whereas the supreme Purple Pin is awarded for work that ‘raises the bar of New Zealand design.’

Matt Galloway, Senior Lecturer in Communication Design at Otago Polytechnic, is delighted with this year’s results. “This is the highest number of finalists we’ve ever had in the awards,” he says. “The Gold, Silver and Bronze awards will be announced on October 14th, but to make the finals is a great achievement in its own right.”

The Otago Polytechnic finalists are current Bachelor of Design (Communication) students Charlotte Boyce and Craig Quested with their publication for the 2016 Food Design Conference, and current Bachelor of Design (Honours) student George Chalmers with his 2015 third year communication design project 'Sugar Coated'.

Former Polytechnic students, Laiyna Caratti and Adam Gorrie, are also finalists. Laiyna, a Communication Design exchange student in 2015, produced a book for Dunedin School of Art senior lecturer Johanna Zellmer. Adam, a 2015 Bachelor of Design (Product) graduate, has had his final project – Delta Bike Rack Work Stand – included.

Matt Galloway has reached the finals as well for his Blue Oyster Poster Series. His work has been included in 3 categories: Design Communication, Design Craft and The Colour Award.

This year’s Best Awards ceremony is taking place on Friday 14th October, 2016 at the Viaduct Events Centre in Auckland.
