NZ Wins More Medals in Namibia

NZ Wins More Medals in Namibia
Media release: Thursday 13 October 2016

From Invercargill to Walvis Bay…Just ten days after competing at the 2016 New Zealand Gymsports Championships, the New Zealand junior women’s artistic gymnastics team take multiple podium finishes at the Junior Commonwealth Championships in Namibia.

Tuesday night NZ time saw the team, consisting of Stella Ashcroft (Christchurch School of Gymnastics), Samadiana Fariz and Isabella Brett (Tri Star Gymnastics), finish in third place (149.25) behind Wales (158.95) and South Africa (152.40). Sri Lanka and Namibia were also in the teams field.

Team mate Charlotte Ryan from North Harbour Gymnastics, unfortunately withdrew from competition due to a training injury.

Stella, Samadiana and Isabella continued their success last in the individual apparatus finals.

Samadiana finished third on vault. Stella Ashcroft took first place on beam and second on floor, with teammate Isabella Brett finishing second on beam and sharing third on floor.

The girls reckon it was the locally cooked eggs they had for lunch that gave them the edge for their performances.

Josiah Geange from Tri Star Gymnastics Club is the official tour coach with GymSports NZ life members Michele Hawke and Marie Stechman attending as judges.

The New Zealand junior rhythmic gymnastics team kick off competition tonight NZ time.

Ends.
