FESTA begins this Friday

FESTA kicks off this Friday 21 October with the SuperWOW Disco, live for one night only at the much-loved Dace-O-Mat and the opening of the Lost Christchurch exhibition, which looks at the erasure of heritage architecture in the city. It continues on with basket and rope weaving workshops at the Village of Resourcefulness; the Reuse, Recycle and Rhythm workshop for kids and a cardboard aeroplane competition; a symposium on why we should love our institutions; a home garden workshop; foraging and city-making tours, right through to a special FESTA edition PechaKucha, which takes over the Christchurch City Council Civic Building on the closing night.

With more than 30 events on offer across Labour Weekend and a theme of We Have The Means, FESTA celebrate the resources we have available to us in terms of our people and reusable materials.

Showcasing the myriad of creative responses that have emerged in Christchurch’s unique environment, FESTA offers a chance for the public to experience the city differently through speaker sessions, art, hands-on workshops, events for kids and much more.

Lean Means - the spectacular temporary city live on Saturday 22 October

On Friday students from seven leading design and architecture schools from across Australasia will be installing 18 imaginative temporary structures made from ‘waste’ materials in vacant sites in and around the Christchurch Art Gallery in the lead up to FESTA’s headline event Lean Means – a spectacular temporary city live for one night only on Saturday 22 October.

This large-scale transformation of inner city spaces through the transformation of waste materials is a creative exploration of the sustainable ways we could regenerate our city

This night of colour, lights and community is free and open to all.

Lean Means is Christchurch’s biggest, most creative street party, packed with performance, markets, food, bars art and more.

It is the not-to-miss event of FESTA’s 2016 programme, entitled We Have the Means, which celebrates the resources we have available to us, in terms of our people and reusable materials.

A range of activities and urban experiences animate this temporary city:

• The Christchurch Art Gallery and CoCA are staying open late for night viewings of their exhibitions

• a night market has second-hand goods and upcycled items on offer

• a wearable art parade for children kicks things off

• a village of resourcefulness (Juliet Arnott of Rekindle in conjunction with Ara architecture students), where craftspeople undertake high quality crafts that are zero waste in nature in a village made from temporary shelters

• movement artist Julia Harvie creates a series of nests over the course for 6 hours and will be suspended at the back of the CoCA building

• artist Julia Morison has collaborated with Massey design students to create an installation/projection screen/pavilion of cardboard carpet cores

• DJs

• Street games

• Dance performances and workshops
