Citizen Stylist hits Princes Street

Citizen Stylist hits Princes Street

Try something completely new, or mix it up with your own clothes … anything goes at ‘Citizen Stylist’ this weekend.

Professor Margo Barton, from Otago Polytechnic School of Design (Fashion), wants to prove that anyone can wear emerging designer fashions. She invented ‘Citizen Stylist’ to give the public an opportunity to try just that. Citizens are invited to come in and try on fashion designs from Otago Polytechnic students and graduates. They’re welcome to combine pieces with their own wardrobe, or try something completely different.

“The point of this project is three-fold” says Professor Barton. “Firstly, it makes people aware of the fantastic design talent out there, and gives them courage to try on something new. Secondly, it helps people become aware of ethically produced fashion, to meet the maker behind the garments, and perhaps think about that when they buy clothes. Finally, this is fantastic for the designers. It’s an opportunity for them to see how the public would style their designs.”

There’s just one rule: citizens must choose at least two designers to mix and match. That way, students can see how others may style their designs. Once the citizen has chosen their style, their photo will be taken, and posted on Citizen Stylist’s Instagram and Website.

Professor Barton trialled Citizen Stylist with fashion students from the di:Angewandte, University of Applied Arts in Vienna, earlier this year. It was so successful, she decided to bring it home. “This is very close to my heart. It promotes sustainability, gives people a chance to try new looks, and makes fashion fun” explains Professor Barton.
