Toi Two Hundy is back with more art bargains

Toi Pōneke’s Toi Two Hundy annual art show is a chance for Christmas shoppers to grab a last-minute art bargain, with all artworks $200 or under.

Art has never been so affordable. There are 25 diverse Toi Pōneke artists with skin in the game; exhibiting and selling their paintings, jewellery sculptures and more at affordable prices.

The 2016 Toi Two Hundy is the final exhibition of the year at Toi Pōneke Arts Centre which was established by Wellington City Council in 2005 to house and support emerging Wellington artists.

Mayor Justin Lester says this is a special showcase of the unique art being created in Wellington.

“If people are the heart of the creative capital, then Toi Pōneke is the pulse. The arts are a priority for me and I want to be sure that as a city we support our talented artists, so they can continue to create."

He says: “Toi Two Hundy makes it easier for people to have their own special, locally created pieces. A $200 price cap is incredibly affordable by art standards!”

David Brown, a Toi Pōneke resident artist, adds: “It’s nice to share what we’ve been working on, and show Wellington what has been happening in Toi Pōneke’s studios.”

Located on Abel Smith Street,Toi Pōneke is more than 3000 square metres of space over eight floors across two adjacent buildings. More than 35 local artists have studios in the complex which also provides office space for a number of arts organisations.

This year’s Toi Two Hundy includes work from mosaic artist Rachel Silver, who has had a busy year with large outdoor commissions and a new project using donated ceramics that broke in the November 14 quake.

Painter Laura Woodward took sketches based on her large-scale wall drawings to the next level and created new stand-alone pieces in bright, popping colours. Laura’s work in the Toi Two Hundy takes the most striking features from her site-specific work and makes it possible to take those aspects home with you.

Also available will be hand-crafted jewellery - a great Christmas gift for loved ones.

Keri-Mei Zagrobelna and Terence Turner have created finely-crafted pounamu and silver jewellery. Keri-Mei was recently part of a kiwi cultural delegation to the Festival of Pacific Arts in Guam, which was about uniting Pacific peoples. Since her return, Keri-Mei has been working with geometric shapes and kowhai seeds.

The Toi Two Hundy opens at Toi Poneke Arts Centre on Tuesday 13 December at 5.30pm and runs daily until Thursday 22 December, 5pm.

Opening hours are weekdays 10am-8pm, and weekends 10am-4pm.

Come along and support local artists and pick up something for yourself, or have an arty little something wrapped under the Christmas tree this year.
