Ronald McDonald House Charities receives more than $34,000 from the ASB Classic

Jack Sock and Lauren Davis aren’t the only winners to emerge from the 2017 ASB Classic.

Through the ASB Rally for Charity initiative, the tennis tournament generated $18,090 for Ronald McDonald House Charities New Zealand (RMHC) to help meet the growing demand for its accommodation services across the country.

ASB Rally for Charity saw some of the best tennis players in the world help raise the money on their best rallies on centre court. When a rally reached 10 hits, ASB started donating $10 to RMHC for every successive shot reaching a total of $18,090 across the two-week tournament.

Despite her early departure from the tournament, Serena Williams helped create one of the longest ASB Classic 2017 rallies, reaching 23 hits in her match against Madison Brengle earning $130. The ASB Classic’s longest rally was between Marcos Baghdatis and Adrian Mannarino reaching 41 hits and earning $310 for RMHC.
ASB presented the ASB Rally for Charity total of $18,090 to RMHC at Saturday’s men’s final. RMHC is the official charity partner of the 2017 ASB Classic.

Through ASB’s additional fundraising efforts at the two-week tournament including the popular ‘Lobbo’, the ASB Heart Wall and cushion donations, ASB will donate an additional $16,000 to RMHC.

ASB executive general manager marketing and communications Roger Beaumont is delighted to see RMHC receive a total of $34,090 thanks to players and tennis fans.

“ASB recently celebrated a 10-year relationship with Ronald McDonald House Charities, and we’re thrilled their important work will benefit through partnering with the 2017 ASB Classic,” Mr Beaumont says.

Ronald McDonald House Charities chief executive Wayne Howett says the money raised will be used to provide accommodation and support for Kiwi families at its three houses in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.

“In 2016 we took care of more families than ever before, and the demand for our services continues to grow,” Mr Howett says.

“We are most grateful to ASB for their significant support through ASB Rally for Charity, and the wider New Zealand community who supported the various activations for us over the past two weeks of the ASB Classic. It’s been an incredible tournament and a real privilege to be part of,” Mr Howett says.
