ANTARCTICA - while you were sleeping

ANTARCTICA - while you were sleeping

FRI 24, SAT 25 AND SUN 26 MARCH, 8.30PM-11PM, FREE

The world premiere of visual artist Joseph Michael's ANTARCTICA - while you were sleeping opens in just ten days.

For three nights as the sun sets over the Domain, the Museum’s iconic building will become the canvas for a full-scale 360-degree projection of a majestic Antarctic iceberg.

Visual artist Joseph Michael has collaborated with composer Rhian Sheehan to create an immersive multi-sensory installation that translates the scale and awe of Antarctica. Listen to the ice crack and drip, creak and groan as colossal sections of ice calve off, set to a dramatic sound score.

A free, fully immersive visual and audio experience for an audience of all ages, while you were sleeping is a New Zealand first, and the largest project of its kind in the southern hemisphere.

As an artist, Joseph Michael seeks out the rare and sublime in the natural world and fuses creative vision with cutting-edge technology. He has worked with revolutionary motion control techniques on Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit, built 3D time-lapse rigs and created 360-degree cinema experiences.

Delve deeper into the story and hear from Joseph Michael at his free Artist Talk on Friday 24 March, or learn more at the Antarctica Smart Talk on climate change, featuring Noelle McCarthy, Dr Mike Williams, Joseph Michael and Sandy Morrison on Saturday 25th March.

Bring a blanket and settle in for the awe-inspiring ANTARCTICA – while you were sleeping, part of the last weekend of Auckland Arts Festival.

The show runs on a 45 minute loop from 8.30pm until 11.00pm on Friday 24 March, Saturday 25 March and Sunday 26 March. We will have a selection of delicious food available onsite from Hail Elsie, Taco Loco, Lalele Organic Gelato, MELT, Toro Churro, Little Food Truck & Nitro Cow.

Co-presented by Auckland Arts Festival and Auckland Museum.

With support from The Wallace Foundation, The Friedlander Foundation, Creative NZ and The Deep South Challenge.
