Putting the capital’s comedians on Kiwi screens

MEDIA RELEASE: For Immediate Release

WELLINGTON COMEDY WEBSERIES

Putting the capital’s comedians on Kiwi screens

Wellington comic and producer, Brad Zimmerman, has created a web series featuring the very best comedians in the capital. For too long, there have been no opportunities for comedians outside of Auckland to broaden their exposure to a wider audience, and it’s about time Wellington’s vibrant scene got a chance to truly shine.

The Wellington comedy community has gone through a renaissance in the past decade, with plenty of ups and downs along the way. In 2010, The Humorous Arts Trust was founded to help boost local comedy projects, and in 2015, VK’s Comedy & Blues bar became the first ever full-time comedy venue in the city. Then sadly, in early 2017, VK’s had to come to a close.

The amount of regular shows and the amount of performers have grown exponentially, and this year three out of the five Billy T Award nominees are from the capital. It’s safe to say that Wellington comedy has never been stronger than it is today.

Zimmerman has teamed up with professional film editor, Ben Powdrell, and hopes that their web series will be a way for Wellington comedians to reach a wider fanbase, and for New Zealand viewers to get some more variety and local content on their screens.

A successful crowdfunding campaign ran on Boosted.org.nz throughout the month of November 2016, to assist with the production costs. The wider comedy community came out in force to support the project.

The “first season” of the series, Wellington Mic Drop, includes award-winning comedians James Nokise, Patch Lambert, Nik Bruce-Smith, Lucy Roche, Jerome Chandrahasen and more.
