On Yer Bike! Mamilreturns for Two Nights Only

Auckland Live presents
MARK HADLOW IN
MAMIL (MIDDLE AGED MAN IN LYCRA)

Following a sell-out premiere season across New Zealand in 2014, much-loved Kiwi actor Mark Hadlow reprises his role as a member of one of the most contentious breeds to roam the streets of suburbia: the middle-aged man in Lycra, or MAMIL.

MAMIL, by Gregory Cooper, was lauded in rave reviews in its first outing, and returns to the stage for two nights only, on Friday 9 and Saturday 10 June at the Bruce Mason Centre.

Bryan Cook is a property developer who has accumulated a small fortune building leaky homes. He’s a stressed out, self-medicating, self-loathing arse, killing himself to increase his bank balance while decreasing his golf score. When his business and life fall apart, he joins a men’s cycling group to relieve the stress and get healthy…

Happily taking swipes at the age of entitlement, MAMIL is a contemporary exploration of a male mid-life crisis. Unpacking what it means to be a man in 21st century NZ, and calling out the polarising culture that sees middle-aged men ditch the sports car for Lycra and a superbike, MAMIL grounds itself with local references and a script brimming with puns and rhymes.

Acclaimed NZ playwright Gregory Cooper (That Bloody Woman) wrote MAMIL after conversations with Mark Hadlow, where both men were surprised to discover the emotional undercurrent of banter between blokes riding Exercycles. Expanding on the theme, Cooper created nine characters - all portrayed by Hadlow - to delve into concepts of masculinity.

Shining as the affable, yet uncomfortably relatable anti-hero in the one-man show, Hadlow commands the stage. One of NZ’s favourite actors, the role of Bryan is a perfect fit for Hadlow. Bringing his energetic presence and childlike enthusiasm to the character, Hadlow breathes life into the cleverly crafted monologues to delight even the most stoic of MAMIL-phobes.

Praise for the debut season of MAMIL:

I was left in awe… Hadlow's great performance is coupled with a genius storyline that touches on all the topics that I suspect most middle-aged men wouldn't like to talk about” - 3 News

“Hadlow’s performance is incredibly impressive and he is unafraid to put himself out there. He leaves himself raw and vulnerable as he portrays a middle-aged man slowly reconnecting with his body, his relationships and his life” – The Press
