Brother Design Stars Set to Steal the Show
Media Release 4 May 2017
BROTHER DESIGN STARS SET TO STEAL THE SHOW
Back for a fourth year, Brother Design Stars is giving young creative talent the chance to steal the show and grab the limelight at this year’s New Zealand Fashion Week Graduate Show, supported by Brother.
Brother Design Stars is a Fashion and Craft Award that is free to enter and encourages students in school years 7 to 13 to express their creativity and design ability. Winning designs will be rewarded with thousands of dollars’ worth of prizes and money-can’t-buy experiences.
Brother International (NZ) Limited is giving finalists the opportunity to showcase their designs at New Zealand’s most prestigious fashion event – New Zealand Fashion Week (NZFW). Award winners will watch their winning designs take centre stage in the NZFW Graduate Show, supported by Brother front row, next to some of the best in the industry.
“We want to encourage youth to explore their talent at a young age” says Brother International (NZ) Limited General Manager of Marketing, Emma Crossett. “Supporting New Zealand’s next generation of creatives is one way Brother can give back to the community. Our partnership with NZ Fashion Week builds on this, so we can applaud this talent on a global stage and give winners an experience that inspires their career development”.
Last year’s Supreme winner, Sophie Parsons, sought her inspiration from the Greenlandic Inuit people to create a stand-out design. Parsons was named a Brother Design Star live on the Fashion Week runway. She had the opportunity to meet inspirational designers and rub shoulders with top fashion graduates and tutors from around the country.
Director of New Zealand Fashion Week, Dame Pieter Stewart, is a passionate advocate of young designers and recognises the need to celebrate young creatives just starting their design journey.
“Last year’s launch of the Graduate Show was a real coup for young emerging talent in New Zealand. Having Brother sponsor this show and introduce Brother Design Stars as the youngest talent at Fashion Week, builds on our desire to support and grow top young talent. Providing a platform through their early steps will hopefully help them become established designers in the local and international market.”
The design theme for 2017 Brother Design Stars will be ‘Steal the Show’. Entrants are encouraged to create a design that stands out from the crowd, and makes a real fashion statement. The theme runs across both categories; Brother Design Stars Craft Award and Brother Design Stars Fashion Award. These are split into two age groups – school years 7 to 9 and 10 to 13.
Those who are fashion savvy, follow trends, and love to express their individual fashion style, are invited to enter the Fashion Award. Entrants must create a runway-ready fashion item or complete outfit.
The Brother Design Stars Craft Award asks entrants to design and assemble a statement hat or headpiece. This category will appeal to those with an interest in DIY, decorating, craft and who love experimenting with different materials – glue gun and all.
Award winners in each category will travel to Auckland to watch the show and enjoy exclusive backstage access as Brother VIPs at NZFW. Return flights to Auckland and one night’s accommodation will be included for each category winner and a guardian/parent.
Registrations for Brother Design Stars open Monday 1 May, and close Friday 7 July 2017. Entrants must register online at www.brotherdesignstars.co.nz. All physical entries must be received for judging by 5pm Friday 14 July 2017. Winners will be announced in August.
