To mark Waikato Museum's 30 years on Grantham Street, a series of exhibitions and events will celebrate the highlights of the three decades of operation, the diversity of our collection, and our role in the community.

On the occasion of the Museum’s
anniversary on this site, this exhibition remembers the
obstacles and opportunities involved in setting up the new
Museum as well as its forerunner
institutions.

Ngaa Taonga: Treasures from Waikato Museum
Te Whare Taonga o Waikato

29 October 2017.
Thirty years ago, collections from
the Waikato Historical Society and the Waikato Society of
the Arts combined to form the beginnings of the collection
of Te Whare Taonga o Waikato. Today the Museum houses over
30,000 artefacts. This exhibition shares some of the
treasures from the Museum’s
collection.

event.
Ken Gorbey, Director of Waikato Museum
1971-1985, discusses Waikato Museum’s role in forming his
personal ideas about the role of museums in communities and
nations around the world.
2. Te Winika Floor Talk -
Sunday 24 September, 2-3pm, free
event.
Professor Ngahuia Te Awekotuku MNZM will talk
about the magnificent waka taua, Te Winika.
3. Tainui Carvings Floor Talk: Wikuki
Kingi - Saturday 7 October, 2pm-3pm, free
event.
Wikuki Kingi, Master Carver from Kirikiriroa
Marae, will share the history and significance of the
carvings in Te Whare o Te Winika.
4. Heritage Talk: Dr Ann McEwen - Saturday 14
October, 2pm-3pm, free event.
Heritage Consultant Dr
Ann McEwen shares her insights into Waikato’s
architectural history.
5. Auckland Art Gallery Curator Talk: Ron
Brownson - Sunday 22 October, 2pm-3pm, free
event.
Auckland Art Gallery Senior Curator Ron
Brownson shares his favourites from the Ngaa Taonga exhibition.
6. Conal McCarthy Talk: Museums and Indigenous People - Sunday 29 October, 3pm-4pm, free event. Hear how the relationship between museums and heritage and indigenous people has changed in the last three decades.
7. Tuupuna Awa, River Ancestor: The People of the Waikato River - Saturday 18 November, 2pm-3pm, free event. Dr Marama Muru-Lanning (Waikato Tainui, Ngaati Maniapoto) shares stories about her personal connection to the river and its significance to Waikato Maaori.

Hamilton Civic Choir
8 October 2017, 3pm - 4pm, free event
A highlight of the opening of Waikato Museum on 3 October 1987 was the performance by Hamilton Civic Choir, which included Waikato Song by composer Edwin Carr, a choral work commissioned specially for the opening and conducted by Guyon Wells.
To help mark Waikato Museum’s 30 years on Grantham Street, Hamilton Civic Choir will once again grace the Museum’s galleries to perform a special concert celebrating the connection between two of Waikato’s leading cultural institutions.
