Hold onto your seats because you’re about to get swept away on a heaving pageant tide full of blood, sweat and tans.
Australian writer and performer Telia Nevile can’t wait to make her New Zealand performance debut when she brings her epic adventure Poet vs Pageant to BATS Theatre for the 2018 NZ Fringe Festival Wellington.
Performed in poetic cadence and steeped in the blood of a true hero’s journey, this show will have you giggling, gasping and clutching at your heart.
What will happen when awkward outsider Miss PL dives head-first into the perilous seas of a beauty pageant? Come gasp at the hidden shoals of the Swimsuit Round, cheer on the hair-raising offerings of the Talent Section, and wipe your clammy palms during the Crowning Ceremony, because everything’s on the line now.
“It’s a show about outer change and its inner cost,” Nevile says. “Miss PL starts this journey full of preconceptions and prejudice, but as the contestants around her start dropping like flies, she discovers a new side to both them and herself. Plus, there’s a cheerleading routine!”
Miss Congeniality meets Roald Dahl in this must-see show for lovers of empowering, insightful, tongue-in-cheek performance.
“Inspirational, mesmerizing, profound, relatable, absolutely fantastic – those are a few of the countless ways to describe Telia Nevile’s outstanding spoken word performance.” Montreal Theatre Hub “Her lyrical prose makes us feel for the contestants as much as the heroine, and, as the beauty pageant draws to its finale, I’m embarrassed to admit I was holding my breath! Poet vs Pageant is an epic journey of self-discovery and self-affirmation.” Glam Adelaide
“Clever, distinctive, intelligent and insightful: a feast for lovers of literature, and a delight for fans of the nerdy-underdog tale.” Great Scott Media
“It brought some audience members to tears while others sat stunned, processing the sheer power of her words. A beautiful modern day fairy-tale.” TREv Adelaide telianevile.virb.com
