Local art sector connects to global campaign

Palmerston North has put its hand up to take part in a global street art event to support and raise awareness around gender parity.

As part of the International Women’s Day 2018 campaign theme, local artists Gemma Farrell aka Gembol and Auckland artist Emily Gardner aka Adore, will team up to join a contingent of female artists across the globe to support the #PressforProgress cause.

“This mural will be a representation of female empowerment. A never ending struggle to re-connect with our intuition and inner wisdom,” local artist Gemma Farrell says. “We are humbled by the hard work done by women who have come before us, and acknowledge that there is much more work to be done for women throughout the world.”

The #PressforProgress theme is a strong call to motivate and unite friends, colleagues and whole communities to think, act and be gender inclusive.

The talented duo will represent Aotearoa, joining artists from Australia, Indonesia, Spain, London, Argentina, Canada and United States. Council’s Placemaking initiative has provided materials and traffic management support towards the cause.

“It means a lot for an artist from further afield to seek collaboration with one of our locals and adds to the urban flavor of the city.” Council Planner Keegan Aplin-Thane says.

Located opposite the new FMG building, the artists will have a blank canvas to create an emotive and unique piece of street art. A pop-up area will also be available for people to sit back and enjoy the artwork unfold this Thursday.
