Te Auaha showcases tutor work in new exhibition

Tuākana our tutors is the latest exhibition at the Te Auaha Gallery in Dixon Street.
Curated by Mary-Jane Duffy, the exhibition introduces the work of tutors from the visual arts programmes at Te Auaha and includes a range of media from across the disciplines taught in the School of Creativity—creative technology, drawing, carving, painting, jewellery, textiles, and photography.

A number of these tutors are well known artists active in the Wellington art scene. They include Gareth McGhie, Mel Phillips, Peter Deckers, Chris White, Deidra Sullivan, Johanna Mechen, Supphawut Supanun, Deb Donnelly, James Molnar, Darren Ward, Alice Moore, James Brown, Vivien Atkinson, Kelly McDonald and Matthew McIntyre-Wilson

Tuākana highlights the people behind the teaching; it celebrates what they bring to Te Auaha showcasing their national and international connections, industry and teaching experience in multiple contexts, not to mention the modelling of contemporary art practice” said Te Auaha Director Victoria Spackman.

“Each tutor has their own approach to their work, their own interests and processes—something that they encourage in students. In this way our tutors are like tuākana or mentors working with and guiding students to develop their skills, find their distinctive voices, and reach their potential.”
