Sir Graham Henry To Take On The Camino For Kiwi Kids

Sir Graham Henry To Take On The Camino For Kiwi Kids

It’s the most famous pilgrimage trail in Europe and now Kiwi travellers can take on the challenge of the Camino for a cause close to home, with none other than Sir Graham and Lady Raewyn Henry.

As part of their ongoing partnership, World Expeditions and Variety – the Children’s Charity have teamed up yet again to offer travellers the chance to take on a challenge abroad, all whilst raising funds for disadvantaged Kiwi kids.

Led by hosts Graham and Raewyn, the 11-day Variety Food Lover’s Camino Challenge will see travellers enjoy the best of Spain whilst taking on the Camino from Bilbao to Santiago.

Graham, who has been on many trips around the globe and has performed under pressure on the rugby field too many times to count, says he is looking forward to taking on a challenge of a different kind.

“We’ve led plenty of Rugby World Cup trips with large numbers of people and we’ve done a lot of tripping around, but nothing like this,” he says.

“Raewyn and I are both really looking forward to this trip and hope to have many other travellers join us and take on this challenge together.”

‘Without a doubt the most famous pilgrimage trail in Europe and a key event on many travellers’ must-do lists’, World Expeditions New Zealand’s general manager, Natalie Tambolash, encourages people to secure their spot on what will be a trip of a lifetime.

“World Expeditions is excited to be offering this fantastic food lover’s walk for this year’s Variety Challenge, with New Zealand’s formidable sports couple, Sir Graham and Lady Raewyn Henry,” she says.

“With fully supported day walks on the best sections of the trail paths, including the original route from Oviedo, travellers can experience an authentic pilgrimage walk.”

Lorraine Taylor, Variety’s chief executive officer, says the trip will be a fantastic experience, adding that as well as an experience of a lifetime, participants will be treated to the feel-good factor of helping underprivileged Kiwi kids realise their dreams.

“Money raised through this trip will go directly to our Have a Go Scholarship programme, which provides young people with the chance to participate in extra-curricular activities they would otherwise miss out on,” she says.

“We would love to see as many people as possible take part in this trip. Not only is it an achievable challenge and an amazing experience, but it will make the world of difference to many children across the country.”

Departing from Bilbao, Spain 30 October, this unique approach to a classic pilgrimage route combines a passion for good food and produce, with the incredible history of the trail crossing northern Spain.

The day walks are fully supported and are combined with cooking demonstrations and numerous samplings of the local cuisine from the heart of Spanish modern cuisine in the Basque region to the small rural villages on the Camino.

In the company of a local gastronomic expert, there will be many insights into the local culinary scene, with a dinner experience in a Michelin Star restaurant.

The land-only trip is priced from $5490, with many inclusions.
